AN OVERVIEW OF THE DIOCESE THROUGH THE ARCHDEACONRIES

The Diocese of Calabar is made of three Archdeaconries:

Calabar,
Ikom
Ogoja

With the level of intense and productive approach to evangelism and missions, the archdeaconries are experiencing increase in the number of Churches and Parishes. Our Diocese is basically a rural Diocese and the Parishes are situated in the far rural areas, in the interior villages. The Archdeacons are therefore directly involved in rural rugged evangelism, deliverance and outreaches. They combat with various forms of attack including witches, wizards, paganism, fetishes, such as worship of mountain, springs, trees, stone, idolatry, superstition, ignorance and diseases. Some of the natives worship snakes, birds, crocodile and superstitiously believe in various gods including god of fertility, good harvest, and also get involved in all forms of sacrifices.

With the regular revival and evangelistic programmes going on, souls are won into the church. Thorough follow-up are being carried out in the Parishes through organized programmes in the Archdeaconries. After this there is a firm introduction to the scriptures by means of bible studies and Sunday school followed by the creation of a good atmosphere of worship in our church services where the word of God is preached and we have its demonstration in healings and teachings. Baptism, confirmation and witnessing are other stages where the new converts share their faith with others.

With all these in place, the number of churches in the Diocese has increased from 18 in 1999 to 96 in 2003. We bless God for the activities of the Archdeacons. Our Lord has indeed been faithful.
